The year is 2542. On the Terran colony of Scythia, Andrei Ayanda, a bitter, divorced technical security officer, spends his days repairing the Automated Peacekeepers that patrol the streets of New Kyiv. When an order comes in to retrieve a broken bot in the slums of Zone 14, known to locals as “Holmantown,” he and his partner, Helene, get tangled in a worsening thread of lies and a growing stack of bodies.

Robert’s third novel is set in the same universe as Vagabonds and Praxis, and it is the first new title from Marty & Madden. Interviews with Robert are available ahead of the November 1 release.

About the house

A mentor and his student, on one shelf

Marty & Madden Publishing brings together two writers with a long history. Doug McKim was Robert Midgett’s writing mentor when Robert was a Middle Tennessee teenager working on his first science fiction novel. More than a decade later, the two have combined their work into one house.

Between them, Robert and Doug have written eight novels and novellas across science fiction, fantasy and coming-of-age fiction. Their earlier books are being brought under the Marty & Madden name, and new work, starting with Robert’s Hard Times In Holmantown, will be published there too.

Robert B.W. Midgett

Science fiction novelist · Co-founder

Robert Midgett grew up in Mt. Juliet, Tennessee, and started writing in the third grade. He spent two years on his first novel, the science fiction book Vagabonds, and finished it at 15. It was published in 2013 while he was a student at Wilson Central High School, and he gave 10% of its profits to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.

His second novel, Praxis, follows a major character from Vagabonds, now grown and working as an assassin for an intergalactic crime family. It launched in June 2015 at Hypericon, the Nashville speculative fiction convention. As a teenager Robert was a special guest at Sci Fi Summer Con in Atlanta, where he signed books and spoke on panels about writing and publishing. He headlined a Meet the Author night at the Lebanon-Wilson County Public Library and was interviewed by FOX 17 in Nashville, WAVE 3 in Louisville and The Chris Top Show. He names Ray Bradbury, H.P. Lovecraft, Mark Twain and Doug McKim among his influences.

His new novel, Hard Times In Holmantown, returns to the same universe and arrives November 1, 2026.

In Robert’s wordsOn Zeph, from Vagabonds

Zeph was not the hero he tried to make himself out to be. Characters like Zeph simply want to be seen as heroes, for the sake of personal glory. The scariest thing about him is not his personal lack of any form of empathy, but that he is a reflection of people in our own world.

We take monsters and we make them out to be these heroic public figures. Zeph is a warning for the world that these people are real, and they will destroy you if you get in their way.
